Socrates is credited with the observation that the unexamined life is not worth living. What he did not say, and what I have come to believe is equally true, is that examination alone is not the same as integration. You can examine your life with extraordinary thoroughness and still be emotionally unavailable.
The Architecture of Intellectual Defense
In Pasadena, shaped by Caltech, JPL, Fuller Theological Seminary, and the legal and financial institutions of the San Gabriel Valley, I encounter people of extraordinary intellectual capacity who have used that intelligence to build a remarkably effective defense against their own interior life.
What Emotional Unavailability Actually Looks Like
Emotional unavailability is not the absence of emotion. It is the absence of access to emotion in the moment that it matters. The person feels things deeply, but they feel them later, after they have processed them through the filter of analysis. In the moment of connection, what is available is the thought about the feeling.
The Limits of Self-Analysis
Analysis works at the level of the cortex, the thinking brain. The patterns that produce emotional unavailability are encoded at a deeper level, in the limbic system and the brainstem. You cannot think your way out of a pattern that is not primarily a thinking pattern.
What Life Telling Processing Offers
The work I do is called Life Telling Processing. It offers a pathway into the story underneath the analysis. Not the story the person has constructed about themselves, but the story that is living in the body, in the nervous system, in the survival programs installed before the story could be told.
I offer a free 15-minute consultation to anyone who wants to look at whether this work might be useful for the road they are on. No commitment required.
